Dolphin gets released from rehab..

Today was one for the history books.  The first official release of a dolphin (named Octavius) in Louisiana that had undergone rehab was released back in the wild right here in Grand Isle!  He was rescued six months ago and went to Audubon for care.  Dolphin strandings are unfortunately common, especially in places where you have large dolphin populations.  They happen for all kinds of reasons, but occasionally we get a live stranding and he/she is safely moved to a local rehabilitation facility. Crawfish Boil!

Most Louisiana gatherings involve crawfish boils, crab boils, fried fish, and/or gumbo. What a change from the Florida backyard barbecue!

Other than the fried fish, I’m really impressed with how healthy classic Cajun food can be… Not to mention all their seafood comes from their back door. They do not buy seafood from the grocery store. They buy straight from the fisherman or fish house. Fish is usually caught on the weekends! How fresh is that! Continue reading

Fight for your State Parks

Hello everyone!  I feel so strongly on this topic, I hope you will bear with me.  I’m not sure about other states, but Louisiana is dealing with some severe budget cuts right now under our new governor.  Don’t get me wrong – I am all for balancing the budget, and I am suffering through it at my job being that I work for a state agency.  There is definitely room to “trim the fat”,but I’m throroughly disappointed in the decision to close state parks.  Not all of them are taking the hit, but my local state park that I hold near and dear to my heart is up for the running.  They already run on the most minimal budgets and are something every member of the public can utilize, not just someone that fits in a certain category.  Everyone!

Grand Isle State Park is such a unique treasure to Louisiana.  It is right on the beach, offering beach camping, nature walks through the coastal habitat, paddling on small lagoons, opportunities to see tons of birds, and awesome facilities with a lookout tower.  It has been kept so beautifully natural and when you are there, you can’t help but feel completely immersed into the environment.  The manager just told me they get over 70,000 visitors a year!

IMG_1052So what do you do when something like this happens?  Well, I contacted my political friend, because we all know it’s all about who you know in politics.  He told me that I can also write the governor’s office to voice my opinion, which is what anyone can do no matter who you know.  I immediately wrote them a note on the website.  If you are reading this and would like to stand up for this state park or any other issue that is close you your heart, the website is http://gov.louisiana.gov/.

FullSizeRender (3)Something else to support if you are in Louisiana is the Q50 races.  The do all their races in state parks and are off-road runs.  The not only bring income and support to the parks but also raise money for The Mission, which helps the needy in New Orleans.  Many of the state parks where Q50 holds their races are in the running to close as well.  We recently ran the one in Grand Isle State Park.

So whether you are passionate about your state parks or something else, be sure to voice your opinions to the local government!  There are so many other important things going on in our communities too… hospital closures, education dilemmas, roads, etc.  Stand up for what you know is right.  Somebody has to!

Team Players

As a biologist, we often wear many hats. One may specialize in something such as the reproductive biology of Red Drum, for example, but that doesn’t mean you are only going to do that for the rest of your life. Maybe if you are a professor and that is your primary research, but if not, you may find yourself doing a little of that and a lot of other things. It’s important that as you go through school and are interviewing for jobs to keep your mindset open to new things and be willing to work on other projects. Continue reading

Things I’ve Learned from being the Interviewer

Being a supervisor means that I get thrown into lots of familiar situations but with a different viewpoint, and one of them is the hiring of employees!  We do not hire often, but it just so happened that we had a position open recently.  I have now moved from being the one interviewed to the interviewer.  I think common sense would tell you what kinds of things employers see favorable in future employees, but now I’m hearing things from the horse’s mouth.  I have also surprised myself in little things I pick up from the candidates and how they affect my judgment of them.  I hate to put it that way, but it’s true.  So here are a few things I picked up over the course of the interviews… some expected and some unexpected.  I hope they are helpful!

It’s Been Awhile!

Where has the time gone?  I have been so preoccupied at work.  I have some good news (or is it?)!  I got promoted to Biologist Supervisor at my lab.  What a change!  Now rather than just concentrating on my work, I have to be worried about everyone else’s work too!  And their schedule, questions, behavior, etc…  but it is a labor of love.  I have such a big heart for my lab, the people there, and the work we do that I am happy to be working my tail off for the lab’s greater good.

Avocets on GI

How do you de-stress during your work day? I may have mentioned this before, but my favorite part of my day is running at lunchtime. And it’s not because I love running! It’s because when I get back, I feel ridiculously awesome and renewed… Ready to “start” the rest of my day.

It’s very strategic though… I eat a snack at just the right time so I’m not hungry or full before my run, and I always go at noon. If I try to put it off an hour, I get busy and it doesn’t happen. It is really important to stick to a routine sometimes. This helps me have no excuses. Continue reading
